LAW-5306 PRESIDENTIAL POWERS
This course focuses on presidential power and its limits, covering the actions of historical Presidents and the current sitting President and the executive branch. In this course, students will learn the political structures and constitutional principles that might limit or empower the presidency and how regulatory agencies operate within the executive branch. This course will rely upon historical cases and documents that helped lay the foundation for defining the parameters of the presidency, as well as new cases and issues arising out of the current political climate that give timely context for analysis and application of the constitutional and structural principles. The ordering of the course topics is malleable to allow flexibility to incorporate new cases and issues as they arise. Because some issues intertwine with other substantive areas, e.g., immigration, health care, and the environment, the course might draw upon the expertise of other faculty and guest speakers to help students understand other specialized areas and the impact of the presidency in those other substantive areas.
