LAW-6206 CRIMINAL PROCEDURE IN THE COURTROOM

This course focuses on the judicial phase of the criminal justice process, beginning from the initial decision to bring criminal charges, through the pretrial and trial processes, and concluding with sentencing and appeal. Course coverage includes the following topics: the decision to initiate prosecution; bail and pretrial detention; the grand jury; the right to the effective assistance of counsel; discovery; plea bargaining; the right to an impartial trial; jury voir dire; double jeopardy; and sentencing. It includes understanding the Fifth, Sixth, and Eighth Amendments to the United States Constitution as well as the Florida Constitution and corresponding statutes.
