LAW-6170 PROTECTIONS, CHILD AND LAW

Formerly known as Children and the Law I, the course reviews examines the legal status of the child in America; child abuse and neglect; and the failings of the child welfare and juvenile court systems in addressing the rights and needs of the child and families. A central issue is the allocation of authority among the child, his or her family, and the state as to decision making for the child, the child's "best interests" and family integrity. Conflict between parents and the child, parents and the state, and the child and the state raise constitutional and social policy concerns in the context of the law's treatment of the child and broach problems of other groups who are similarly disabled, legally, physically, and mentally.
