Course Levels
Barry University categorizes courses as follows:
- Lower-Division Courses (100-200 level): These are introductory courses usually taken by freshmen and sophomores. Lower-division courses introduce fundamental concepts, theories, and methods within a discipline, serving as pre-requisites for more advanced study. These courses often fulfill general education requirements, allowing students to explore various fields of study before specializing.
- Upper-Division Courses (300-400 level): These courses are more advanced and are typically undertaken by juniors and seniors. Upper-division courses delve deeper into specific areas of study and require students to have a foundational understanding of the subject matter. These courses usually have pre-requisites, meaning students must complete specific lower-division courses before enrolling. Upper-division courses often involve more challenging coursework, including longer assignments, in-depth reading, and possibly research projects or papers.
- Graduate Courses (500, 600, 700, 800 level): These courses are taken by students pursuing advanced degrees beyond the undergraduate level (master’s, doctoral, graduate certificate, etc.). They provide specialized knowledge and skills in a particular field of study, allowing students to deepen their under-standing and prepare for careers or further research.
