Master of Science in Human Resource Development

Mission Statement

The Master of Science in Human Resource Development program prepares students to enter or excel in the field of HR and lead with confidence to help organizations work better.  The program prepares competent and confident evidence-based Learning and Development (L&D), Talent Development (TD), and Organization Development (OD) professionals and consultants who are strategic partners to organizations and ready to lead the HR transformation.  The program's hands-on curriculum and scholar-practitioner faculty enable students to advance their knowledge and skills in creating sustainable strategies and solutions in employee experience and wellbeing, learning and leadership, and inclusion and diversity.  

Program Goals

The Master of Science in Human Resource Development (MSHRD) program at Barry University focuses on human and organizational performance improvement through learning. Professionals in the field of HRD identify performance gaps and opportunities and design strategic solutions with the purpose to enhance individual and organizational effectiveness.  Students acquire expertise in developing and enhancing individual and organizational learning, talent, and leadership capabilities.

Students will be prepared to design, develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based learning, talent, performance management, organization development, and HR solutions in a variety of organizational contexts. This program exposes students to unique competencies that are not developed in traditional HRM programs, including:   

  • The MSHRD program provides students with the skill set necessary to develop people in the context of work and to effectively drive individual, team, and organizational performance improvement initiatives within both public and private sectors.
  • Students acquire expertise in planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based learning, talent, and organization development solutions in a variety of organizational contexts.
  • The program prepares students to assume leadership and expert roles in the areas of learning and development, talent development, organization development, and diversity and inclusion.

This 36 credit program is designed to meet the needs of the working professional and is offered through face-to-face, hybrid, and online delivery options. The program’s coursework integrates research, theory, and hands-on experiences and has a strong skill-building focus.   

Student Learner Outcomes

Following the completion of the Master of Science Degree in Human Resource Development, graduates should be prepared to:

  • Project trends in training and development and discuss their implications, including aspects of training’s return-on-investment (ROI);

  • Apply adult learning principles in presenting a formal workshop, or facilitating informal learning situations, from work teams to an organizational restructuring;

  • Use effective communication and behavioral skills in diagnosing and resolving learning problems in an organization;

  • Identify separate and overlapping roles and responsibilities among professionals who facilitate, support, and manage organizational learning and growth;

  • Apply appropriate change models to a select organizational setting; and

  • Apply appropriate research methodologies to an HRD problem or concern.

Note:

Organizational experience is recommended but not required to enter the Human Resource Development (HRD) Program.

Graduation Requirements

  • Successful completion of the stated number of required semester hours for the program.
  • Obtain an overall GPA of 3.0 with no more than two Cs.
  • Seven (7) years are permitted to complete degree requirements from the date of initial matriculation.
