Dual Enrollment Program

Barry University is dedicated to finding new ways to serve a diverse community of learners. The Dual Enrollment Program benefits high school students by enabling them to take college-level courses, allowing them to earn dual credit and kickstart their college careers. Our office is dedicated to strengthening our relationships with our participating dual enrollment high schools and to attracting new schools to the program. Overall, we aim to provide a positive, encompassing experience for our students.

Mission of the Dual Enrollment Program

Within the context of the university mission, the Dual Enrollment Program provides qualified high school students the opportunity to take college-level courses at their schools or on the Barry University campus. Through the Dual Enrollment Program, students can test their ability to perform at the college level and earn college credits.

Purpose of dual enrollment (FLDOE, 2020)

  • Enables students to earn high school and university credits, simultaneously.
  • Adds rigor to and broadens the scope of high school curriculum.
  • Acclimates students to university level coursework and expectations.
  • Accelerates time to degree completion.
  • Can increase academic performance and educational attainment.

Participation in the Dual Enrollment Program will give students a head start in their college degree pursuit and the comfort of knowing it could be completed in a shorter amount of time. Barry University offers a wide variety of college courses that can be taken at a student's high school or on the college campus. If you are interested in dual enrollment, reach out to the high school liaison at your school.

Is Dual Enrollment right for YOU?

The Dual Enrollment Program is an opportunity to take challenging courses and accelerate educational opportunities.

  • Students who successfully complete dual enrollment courses will save time and money toward their college degree.
  • Students should understand, however, that dual enrollment courses are college courses and the amount of work necessary to succeed in dual enrollment classes may be much greater than in high school courses. In addition, dual enrollment courses become part of a student’s permanent college transcript and are calculated into the student’s permanent postsecondary GPA.
  • Poor performance as a dual enrollment student can, ultimately, impact one’s postsecondary career, including acceptance to a state university, academic standing, and financial aid eligibility. It is important to take these courses seriously and do your best, to realize all the benefits of dual enrollment.

Who is eligible to participate in Dual Enrollment?

All students in grades 9-12 must meet the following minimum eligibility requirements:

  • be enrolled in a course of study at a partner high school which will fulfill requirements for high school graduation.
  • have at least a 3.0 unweighted high school GPA, regardless of grade level.
  • satisfy all applicable course prerequisites.
  • meet any additional criteria set by BARRY as the postsecondary institution.
  • have the minimum standardized college placement or readiness score according to the Florida Department of Education’s common placement testing requirement (not required for designated Student Life Skills (SLS) courses). Note that an additional minimal test score(s) may be required for higher level courses.

Financial benefits of becoming a degree-seeking Barry Buccaneer

Dual enrollment students who become undergraduate students at Barry can receive over 50% off the total cost of attendance, not including what is received from FAFSA.

  • Students with a 3.75+ GPA (weighted) can receive the following yearly scholarships:
    • Merit scholarship - $20,000
    • Catholic High School Scholarship - $1,000
    • Dual Enrollment Scholarship - $1,000
    • Honors Program Scholarship - $5,000
      • Total: $27,000 in scholarships 
  • Students with a 3.5-3.74 GPA (weighted) can receive the following yearly scholarships:
    • Merit Scholarship - $18,000
    • Catholic High School Scholarship - $1,000
    • Dual Enrollment Scholarship - $1,000
    • Honors Program Scholarship (3.7+ GPA) - $5,000
      • Total: $25,000 in scholarships
