This course examines the relationship between social policy, social justice, and advocacy strategies used to address inequities affecting marginalized populations. Students analyze the historical, political, economic, and social forces that shape social policy across different policy contexts and apply theoretical frameworks to understand how policies produce and maintain social inequalities. The course introduces policy analysis tools and explores advocacy approaches including community organizing, legislative advocacy, social action, electoral engagement, and embedded advocacy within organizations and institutions. Through applied exercises, students develop skills in policy analysis, advocacy strategy design, and policy communication.
