Organizational Leadership (B.S.)

The Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership (B.S.) degree is designed to provide students with the leadership competencies critically needed by all organizations—whether private, public, or non-profit--in order to achieve their missions. This program emphasizes understanding and working with people, the dynamics of change, and leading organizations in today's diverse, team-oriented, and global workplaces.  With focus on teaching how to effectively apply leadership concepts and theories, the program seeks to positively impact organizations by using ethical leadership strategies. Course offerings teach students how to transform contemporary theory into measurable, positive outcomes. 

The objectives of the B.S. in Organizational Leadership degree are to:

• provide students with a comprehensive foundation in leadership theory and practice relevant to many types of organizations--whether small or global; private, public, or non-profit;
• enhance adult learners’ career needs by developing the leadership competencies associated with success in contemporary organizations;
• meet employers’ needs by preparing adult learners to be leaders in the complex, and continually evolving workplace environment;
• nuture the adult learners’ desires for lifelong learning and validate previous learning through the option to earn experiential portfolio credit; and
• in keeping with Barry University's social justice core commitment, offer an online synchronous delivery format that meets adult learners' needs, while maintaining academic integrity.

Program Outcomes

Students who successfully complete the degree program will be able to:
• understand and apply the contemporary leadership theories and practices in organizations;

• effectively employ critical thinking methodology for analyzing and resolving  ambiguous and complex problems in evolving organizations;

• demonstrate competencies including intercultural communications, interpersonal relations, and influencing others required in today's diverse, team-oriented, and global workplaces

• strengthen creativity and the ability to foster an innovative culture;

• synthesize the knowledge, skills, and abilities that are associated with effective leadership and meet the challenges of modern organizations.

Transfer Credits

A maximum of 6 UPPER LEVEL credits can be used either in transfer or earned through the Portfolio into the Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership program. The six upper level transfer credits can be applied in any combination: the Core (course specific only) or in the electives or in the specialization. Students who transfer 6 upper level credits may not use Portfolio credits in the major (Core, Electives or Specialization).

Portfolio Option

Students may submit an Experiential Learning Portfolio in order to satisfy the degree requirements. Students may elect to pursue both a portfolio and a specialization. Up to six upper level credits of related courses may be earned through General Administration, Social Sciences, and Special Topics: Legal Studies, and/or computer Science discipline-specific portfolio credits to satisfy the required electives.

Learning Options

The Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership program is offered in a hy-flex format, involving up to two live sessions held in the Melbourne or the Miami Shores campus and weekly virtual sessions (run via Zoom, Webex, Teams, or similar virtual meeting software).

Course Sequencing

The appropriate first class is OGL-303 for entering students, followed by OGL-353 and OGL-306. Whenever possible, it is highly recommended that students complete the 300 level classes before attempting the 400 level classes. The capstone course, OGL-499, should be completed after all other core classes are completed or concurrently with a 400 level course.

The program includes courses designed to address the HR competencies recommended by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Students who successfully complete the Human Resource Administration specialization will:

Human Resource Administration Certificate (15 credits)

A Human Resource Administration Certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of 15 credits in the specified curriculum. This includes OGL 464 Strategic Human Resource Administration and 12 credits listed under the Human Resource Administration Specialization and for a total of 15 credits. The certificate will be posted on the student’s transcripts. Please notify your advisor of your intentions. Students pursuing the Human Resource Administration specialization will have the specialization posted on the transcripts in lieu of a certificate. All coursework must be completed before graduation. Grades of C or higher must be earned in all course work for the certificate.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Human Resource Administration (21 credits)

Students who have earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university may enroll in the Post-Baccalaureate Human Resource Administration Certificate program. The Post Baccalaureate Certificate Program will be awarded upon successful completion of 21 credits in the specified curriculum. This includes OGL 464 Strategic Human Resource Administration and 18 credits listed under the Human Resource Administration Specialization and for a total of 21 credits. Barry University graduates who may have completed some of the certificate coursework in their degree program may take approved substitutes in order to reach the minimum of twenty-one credits required for the certificate. A grade of C or higher in each course is required to receive a Post Baccalaureate Certificate of Completion.
