Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Statement
The novel coronavirus, COVID-19, has been declared a worldwide pandemic by the World Health Organization. The state of medical knowledge is evolving, but the virus is believed to be extremely contagious and spread from person-to-person contact and/or by contact with contaminated surfaces and objects, and even possibly in the air. The scientific and medical community report that people can be infected and show no symptoms and therefore spread the disease unknowingly. The exact methods of spread and contraction are unknown, and there is no known treatment, cure, or vaccine for COVID-19. Evidence has shown that COVID-19 can cause serious and potentially life-threatening illness and even death.
COVID-19 is a widespread virus/disease, and due to its general spread within the community, the student body, employees and general population are at risk. Although Barry University is taking many precautions and implementing layers of protection to prevent the spread and exposure to COVID-19, Barry University cannot prevent you from becoming exposed to, contracting, or spreading COVID-19 while utilizing Barry University’s services or premises. It is not possible to completely prevent the presence of the disease. Therefore, if you choose to utilize Barry University’s services and/or enter onto Barry University’s premises (owned or leased) you may be exposing yourself to and/or increasing your risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19.
ASSUMPTION OF RISK: Students understand that by agreeing to attend classes, partake of any services or activities, or otherwise come onto campus or any property leased or owned by Barry University, they assume all risks attendant thereto, including the risk of contracting COVID-19.
FlexLearning Acknowledgement:
Barry University is utilizing a FlexLearning model for many courses in the upcoming semester.
- FlexLearning course delivery allows students to attend the same class in-person or remotely.
- It is likely many faculty will be virtual within classrooms; FlexLearning course delivery allows the faculty member to attend the same class in-person or remotely.
- FlexLearning courses will be recorded audio-visually for students to refer back to and for enrolled students who are unable to attend live. Students who participate with their camera turned on or who utilize a profile image are agreeing to have their video or image recorded. Students who un-mute during class and participate orally are agreeing to have their voices recorded. Students who do wish not to be recorded should not use a profile and should keep their camera off and/or their mute button activated throughout the duration of class. The “chat” button feature may be used during the live class to interact with the faculty member and other enrolled students and to type questions or comments. Presence in class may be documented through use of name, University email addresses or electronic identifier.
The flexibility of this model and our technology will be used throughout the semester to meet student needs and preferences. It will also allow for the possibility for us to pivot to fully remote learning if health or regulatory conditions warrant, due to the current health crisis.
Tuition Acknowledgement:
- Tuition will not be adjusted for courses that are offered through the FlexLearning model or switched to fully remote instruction during the semester. Our faculty are committed to delivering quality academic instruction, maintaining our standards and meeting or exceeding accreditation requirements.
- The Office of Financial Aid is available to discuss individual aid packages or personal hardship circumstances on a case by case basis.
